No more trees. Today we climbed above the tree line as we ascended toward Pheriche. The trail is now dirt, rock and brush.
As we passed through Pangboche, I could not help but smile as I recalled an all night party back in 2001. Five of us had been on the mountain for two months. Our small expedition team included great friends, Charlie, John, Greg, Phil and me. Our expedition Sirdar (headman of the climbing Sherpas), Ang Pasang lives in Pangboche. That evening all of us, our climbing Sherpas and several folks from the village congregated in Ang Pasang's home. No electricity, but we had a CD player and batteries. So after a little Chang, beer, and whiskey we all danced the night away to John's Motown CD. At some point, we dropped into our sleeping bags for a few hours. The following morning the walk to Namche was a bit challenging.
In general, I am quite sure Sherpas are the nicest people on earth. For the rest of my life, our summit Sherpas, Dorje Lama from Baganje and Danuru from Phortse will have a special place in my heart.
Today in Pangboche we visited another Lama, Geshe, for another blessing. Now with two Puja strings, we are even safer. Lama Geshe sent us away with a prayer he had written: Give up all intention to harm others from your heart and do your best to benefit them all. If each of us feel the universal responsibility to do so, we will all enjoy the feast of peace!
On the way out of the village we noticed a kitty curled up in the sun. I am having a hard time because I miss my boys, Coho and Chinook, two tabbies almost 12 months old. Can't wait to see them again, oh and you, too, Mom and Dad.
Our climbing team is resting comfortably at Pheriche elevation 14,000'+. We are now living at the equivalent elevation as the “summit” of Mt. Rainier in Seattle. Our team of 18 climbers are all healthy and strong. A bit chilly up here, but the yak dung stove keeps us warm in the dining room. Five more days to Everest base camp!
